Donation quilts are constructed twice a year after the guild meeting. We call it a "Quilt-a-thon" and we sew quilt tops, layer and baste quilts, turn them inside-out so no binding is required, and quilt or tie the quilts.
Donation Quilts
You can make donation quilts at home and bring them to guild meetings to be handled by our donation quilt coordinator. She keeps track of which organizations, hospitals and shelters want quilts, and of what type (girl, boy, baby, adult) and size, and delivers the quilts. She’ll even take pet pads to the Humane Society and grieving envelopes to the neonatal ICUs.
Here are the quilt sizes we need: 84x92" Queen 78x87" Full 57x72" Twin 44x52" Child 36x48" Baby Pet pads of all sizes are needed.
In 2012 we created and donated 928 items!! Volunteers Needed
Volunteer positions and/or duties that are available:
Many positions are available to volunteer for the 2013 Genesee Star quilt show. If you are interested, contact Carolyn Malaski at 810.659.6187 or cfmalaski@aol.com
Lecturer or teacher: Each year the guild schedules two programs that our members present. One is a trunk show and the other is a mini-workshop. We need volunteers to provide these programs. If you are willing to present one of these programs or know of another member who would, contact Teresa Weaver. If you have an idea and are interested in scheduling a class, Teresa will work with you on the details.
Donate Sewing Machines
The Flushing United Methodist Church men's group is collecting sewing machines that will be sent to Missouri where they will be cleaned, repaired and sent to other countries so that people can make their own clothing or sew for the market. If you have a sewing machine that you would like to donate, contact Carolyn Malaski (cfmalaski@aol.com). The machines do not have to be working, as they may be repaired or used for parts.
